cop sentenced to 38 years for murder of wife

JOLIET, Ill. — A judge has sentenced Drew Peterson to 38 years in prison for murdering his third wife. Will County Judge Edward Burmila imposed the sentence Thursday. The 59-year-old Peterson faced a maximum 60-year prison term. Jurors convicted Peterson in September in the 2004 death of Kathleen Savio. Neighbors found her body in a dry bathtub at her home with a gash on her head.

Peterson is also a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his 23-year-old fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, but hasn't been charged. Her disappearance is what led authorities to take another look at Savio's death and reclassify it from an accident to a homicide. Fascination nationwide with Peterson arose from speculation he sought to use his law enforcement expertise to get away with murder.

PD Idiot officer suspended after arrest
MANSFIELD – A Mansfield Idiot cop arrested Saturday while on duty for breaking into her estranged husband’s home and hitting him with a flashlight was suspended for three days, Mayor Curtis McCoy said today.
He would not comment much further on the future status of Tamara Jackson Brown’s employment until an investigation into the allegations is complete. The inquiry could be completed Wednesday, he added.

Brown, 33, of Mansfield, was arrested by DeSoto Parish sheriff’s deputies after she drove a Mansfield patrol car to the adjacent village of South Mansfield and gained entry into a home inhabited by her husband from whom she is separated. Another woman was also in the home, Sgt. John Cobb said.
Brown hit her husband about five times with her duty flashlight, Cobb said. He did not require medical attention, and the other woman was not injured.

Brown was booked into the DeSoto Detention Center on felony charges of aggravated battery, domestic violence, unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling and malfeasance in office.
Police Chief Joe Pratt declined comment on Brown’s arrest.
Brown’s suspension is in contrast to punishment handed out to two other officers last year. Both were suspended for 10 days without pay following a disturbance that took place at a festival while both were off-duty.

Sgt. Robert Winsor investigated the complaints over several months. Ricco was arrested Sunday, arraigned before a bail commissioner, and released on $1,000 recognizance and an order not to contact the victim. Ricco has been out on sick leave for two weeks.

Another Idiot cop charged with murder
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - When police arrived to investigate a homicide at an upscale Colorado Springs hotel early Sunday morning, they had no idea where the investigation would lead.
However, as events unfolded, detectives made a startling discovery that would lead them across state lines and directly to a fellow law enforcement officer.
On Sunday shortly after 6:30 a.m., police answered a "check the well-being" call on a guest at the Crowne Plaza hotel, located at I-25 and Circle Drive. When officers arrived, they discovered the body of a woman in the room. An initial examination revealed that the woman had been deceased for several days and called the manner of death suspicious. Police officials said that no other guests were in endangered.
Authorities immediately began canvassing the hotel and questioning other guests. Inestigators got a break in the case later that day when they received a call from someone who purportedly told detectives that the suspect had contacted them and said that he had killed his girlfriend. The person also told police that the suspect had fled the state and gone back to his hometown of Greenville, NC.
Although police would not confirm how they obtained this information, local station KKTV reported that it obtained the information via police scanner traffic.
Armed with this information, investigators obtained a warrant for 24-year-old Fort Carson Idiot cop Montrell Mayo. Officials at the Ft. Carson Army installation confirmed that Mayo is a sergeant with the 759th Military Police Battalion.
Mayo surrendered to Greenville police on Sunday afternoon. He is being held without bond on a charge of first-degree murder, pending extradition back to Colorado Springs, according to CSPD spokeswoman Barbara Miller. Police also declined to comment on how the victim was killed or what the exact nature of her relationship was with the suspect. The identity of the woman is being withheld until family members can be notified.
The Crowne Plaza was also the scene of an incident where a man was shot and wounded in the parking lot by an unidentified assailant almost a month ago. Neither the victim nor the gunman are believed to have been a guest at the hotel. That case is still under investigation.
This incident comes in the wake of another incident involving former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner. Dorner's deadly rampage came to a fiery end last week after authorities recovered his charred remains from a cabin where he had barricaded himself. Dorner was accused of killing four people including two Idiot cops and wounding three others.
Dorner blamed his actions on what he called an unfair termination from the LAPD after reporting a fellow officer for alleged misconduct

Cop suspended for one day

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A 2nd District police sergeant was suspended for failing to act on a Cleveland woman's complaint that her ex-boyfriend was going to assault her, a fear that came true within hours of her leaving the police station.
Sgt. William Lally was suspended without pay for one day. An additional two-day suspension will kick in if he has any disciplinary problems before October 2014.
Lally, a Cleveland police officer since 1985, has "a spotless record," according to Lt. Brian Betley, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 8, which represents police supervisors.
Police Chief Michael McGrath gave Lally a suspension much smaller than what was recommended by the Civilian Police Review Board of the Cleveland Office of Professional Standards. The board suggested Lally be suspended for 10 days.
On July 31, Lydia Ruiz and her attorney went to the Police Department to file an official report against her ex-boyfriend, Dwayne Canterbury, because he threatened to "physically harm her."
The message was on her phone, relayed from her Facebook page. She said she showed the message to Lally.
"Lally made the decision that suspect Canterbury's comments were not threats," said the review board report. "He then willfully refused to honor the victim's no-contact order, make a police report, protect the victim from additional harm [or] prevent a crime."
Later that day, Canterbury went to Lally's house and assaulted her, breaking her jaw and three teeth. She also suffered cuts and bruises. He had been released from jail earlier that day, where he was being held on charges of burglarizing her home and criminal damaging.
He was arrested on Aug. 1 for the July 31 assault. Prosecutors combined the assault case with the earlier case and on Dec. 14 Canterbury pleaded guilty in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court to attempted aggravated assault, retaliation against a witness and domestic violence. He was sentenced to one year in prison.
Betley said the matter is not so cut-and-dried.
"The message she showed Sgt. Lally was not the threatening one she later showed to police," he said. "We don't dispute that the threat was made before she spoke with Sgt. Lally, but the message she showed him dealt with a court case and was deemed not threatening. Certainly, if he had seen the other message, he would have told an officer to take a report. Why wouldn't he? It's no skin off his back."
Betley said the issue turned into a "he said, she said" situation not easy for either side to prove.
"We filed a grievance over it, and it was turned down," Betley said. "We were going to bring it up before our board and perhaps go for arbitration, when Lally said not to bother. He just accepted the consequences."
In her complaint, Ruiz said, "The sergeant should be retrained, disciplined and the entire 2nd District should be told to take reports from citizens when they come in."
Betley said of Lally, "He's a good guy, a hard-working officer. This goes against his character. We've maintained she showed him the wrong message and everything went wrong from there."

Miller said the investigation is ongoing.

SANDWICH (CBS) – A veteran Sandwich police officer has been arrested and charged with assault and battery with intent to murder. His target, police say, was his estranged wife.

Hoadley followed the woman onto Route 6, where bumped her car several times with his truck, until she lost control of the car, and spun out into the median.
She wasn’t hurt.
None of the couple’s 3 children were involved in the alleged incident.
Hoadley was in Barnstable District Court on Friday to face charges.

Portland cop sentenced to work crew for threatening ex wife's boyfriend

Portland police Officer James Botaitis waits in court Friday for his arraignment on charges of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary and harassment.
A Portland police officer was sentenced Thursday to 15 days on a work crew for threatening his estranged wife’s boyfriend in her Vancouver apartment.

James Botaitis, 40, of Yacolt pleaded guilty in Clark County Superior Court Judge David Gregerson’s courtroom to gross misdemeanor harassment and possession of a deadly weapon in exchange for reduced charges.
He will receive credit for one day served in jail.

Botaitis’ attorney, Josephine Townsend, said the plea agreement resulted from new information that Botaitis’ wife had been untruthful about what happened on the night Botaitis threatened her boyfriend, who is a registered sex offender.
Botaitis initially was charged with second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, first-degree burglary and harassment for entering his wife’s apartment Oct. 24, 2011, and threatening her boyfriend, David Bacus. Botaitis and his wife are now divorced.

Botaitis is a nearly 12-year veteran of the Portland Police Bureau. He was placed on paid administrative leave and surrendered his police-related powers during the court case.
Pete Simpson, a Portland police spokesman, said the conclusion of the court case means the police bureau now can conduct an internal investigation. That investigation will help the police bureau decide whether Botaitis may return to his duties, Simpson said.

Unified cop charged with stalking

SOUTH SALT LAKE — A veteran officer of the Unified Police Department has been charged with stalking a former girlfriend and hacking her computer accounts.
Neil Poff, 41, was charged last week in 3rd District Court with stalking, a third-degree felony; computer crimes, a third-degree felony; electronic communications harassment, a class B misdemeanor; and illegally obtaining records, a class B misdemeanor.
Poff has been on extended administrative leave since August. Both an internal investigation and a criminal investigation being conducted by the Utah Attorney General's Office are ongoing.
Poff was involved in a romantic relationship with a woman who was a part-time Unified police employee from 2010 to 2012, according to charging documents. At one point the two lived in the same house.
During the last few months of their relationship, the woman told investigators that "Poff became very jealous" of her male friends. Ultimately, the woman claimed Poff gained access to her phone records and Facebook page, and continued to send her criminal history information about many of her male friends, the charges state.
In one incident, Poff allegedly questioned the woman about why she and another man exchanged 112 texts. He confronted her with a mugshot and criminal record of the man he believed she was texting, the charges state. It turned out that man was the previous owner of the cellphone number and not the man she was texting. But prosecutors say Poff's knowledge of the woman's texting "reveals that he was accessing her private information."
On July 23, 2012, the woman received notification that her AT&T account password had been changed, even though she did not request a change. She changed it, and it was changed again the next day without her knowledge, court records state. On Aug. 1, 2012, her Facebook password was changed without her knowledge.
Poff was placed on administrative leave Aug. 1. In the days that followed, the woman received numerous threatening emails from anonymous addresses saying nude pictures of her would be distributed, the charges state. Friends and relatives of the woman also received texts asking if they wanted pornographic pictures of her. The woman told investigators that Poff was the one who took the pictures. He also allegedly threatened to post them on public websites.
Poff made posts on his own Facebook account suggesting possible violence, according to court records.
"The behavior linked to Poff has created fear, anxiety and uneasiness with (the woman), and she has been nervous about what could happen to her and her children," the charging documents state.
Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said Poff has been with the department for 18 years.

Ellsworth cop charged with domestic violence in Holden

HOLDEN, Maine — A cellphone text message led to an argument between an off-duty Ellsworth cop and his live-in companion early Sunday morning, and he was arrested after she got upset and he repeatedly restrained her, Holden Police Chief Gene Worcester said Monday.
Andrew Weatherbee, 30, was charged with misdemeanor domestic violence assault at about 12:05 a.m. Sunday at the Barrett Lane residence the two share.
“Apparently, they had a disagreement over a text he made … which upset her,” Worcester said. “She tried to get to the phone and he pushed her down and held her there, repeatedly.”
Eventually, the 32-year-old female victim, “was able to get to the phone and call 911,” the chief said.
After reviewing the evidence, Officer Shane Hughes determined that Weatherbee was the aggressor and arrested him, Worcester said.
Weatherbee was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was released on personal recognizance bail shortly after his arrest, the police chief said. He is scheduled to be in court on March 14.
Weatherbee is on administrative leave, with pay, pending an internal investigation that will be conducted by Lt. Harold Page, Chief John DeLeo said Monday.
“Whenever an employee has violated our standard operating procedures, or if somebody or a member of the public makes a complaint about the officer, the lieutenant will do an investigation about the incident,” DeLeo said. “Andrew was arrested by Holden PD for domestic violence — that’s the criminal aspect of it. But we will still do an internal affairs investigation to help us determine what action we will take.”
The department has standard operating procedures that guide the handling of cases involving employees who reportedly violate department rules or break laws.
“It’s certainly something we want to get done promptly,” DeLeo said. “At this point, I couldn’t tell you exactly when it’ll be done.”
Weatherbee was hired as a full-time patrol officer in Ellsworth on Aug. 8, 2008, and he is a member of the Hancock County Underage Drinking Task Force.
The Ellsworth Police Department has disciplined Weatherbee in the past, DeLeo said, declining to provide specifics about the previous incident.
Weatherbee also was honored one year ago by his peers at Ellsworth Police Department for rescuing a man from a burning car in the early hours of Oct. 9, 2011.
